This course is about reading and writing and how those two activities go together. You will read and write a lot of texts that will be useful for your daily life in university and beyond. You will read and write outside of class to prepare for discussions and activities in the class. You will also read and write in class and think about what texts mean.

The Writing class will focus on the mechanics of writing, such as document design, grammar, and paragraphs, and you will have the chance to work on writing exercises and assignments.
In the Reading class we will read many different kinds of texts and think about the following questions: Who wrote this text? Why did they write it? Who were they writing for? How can we know these things just from reading the text? |
Course Goals:

Late Work:
Assignments have specific due dates. Please hand in your work in on time. In some cases late work will be accepted but given a lower score. If you miss a quiz or class, YOU ARE RESPONSIBLE for organising a make-up test. |
Attendance and Participation:
Bring your iPad, a notebook and pens or pencils to each class. Please come to class on time. If you are more than 10 minutes late, it will count as 1/3 of an unexcused absence. If you are more than 20 minutes late, it will count as 2/3 of an unexcused absence. If you are more than 40 minutes late, it will count as an unexcused absence. If you are late or absent because of a train delay, be sure to get a note from the station (遅延証明書). If you miss class because you are sick, you must bring me a receipt from the doctor. If you have 8 OR MORE UNEXCUSED ABSENCES, you will FAIL, even if your grades are good. If you sleep in class or do not participate in class activities, it will lower your participation grade. |
