Appositives
An appositive is a noun or noun phrase that renames another noun right beside it.
The appositive can be a short or long combination of words. It can either be a Noun eg. The capital of China, Beijing, is a busy and vibrant city. or a Noun Phrase eg. Tim, a novice snowboarder, took a face plant in the snow. An appositive is always separated from the rest of the sentence by commas. Appositives can be used at the beginning of a sentence. eg. A gracious loser, Suzy shook her opponent’s hand when the tennis match ended. Appositives are most often used in the middle of a sentence. eg. When the tennis match ended, Suzy, a gracious loser, shook her opponent’s hand. Appositives are even sometimes used at the end of a sentence. eg. When the tennis match ended, handshakes were initiated by Suzy, a gracious loser. Appositives add variety to sentences. Appositives add more information the noun. Properly punctuated appositives show savvy writing. |
